I got a gun

I got a gun

actually I got two guns
they been in the sock drawer for years unused
but sometimes I think
what if I have to shoot someone
what if the assault weapon people
the NRA and that lot
decide to attack peaceful people
who want guns out of society
would i violate my own peace and shoot back
would i violate a natural instinct to defend those i love

why should I even have a gun
a little 22 lugar six shooter was my dads
and a handsome gun at that
nice to hold
nice to look at and admire
for its smooth lines and simple design

but guns are only the smaller suggestion of deeper stuff
of fear and greed buried deep in the human mind
of paranoid fantasies of being gotten
of being attacked and dominated
so what to do but attack and dominate
a gun in hand gives power
the false kind that the weak must use

gun makers cash in on paranoia
they sell guns by breathing life
into simple fear
stoking the fires of the NRA
working for the masters: greed, fear anger

  1. Good evening, fair readers. I'm Richard's "secret friend," a former far-right conservative, now a sort-of-right, kinda conservative, and I was invited to comment on this. I'm guessing he wants me to be honest, or he wouldn't have mentioned it...

I own a gun, a solid, lethal man-stopper, that was given to me by my son who spent many years in law enforcement and military security. He's seen ugly things, been in the middle of a shootout with a Marine conducting a drive-by on a public street, and he knows what goes on out there. He gave me the gun because he doesn't want his parents to be at the mercy of some of the sociopaths that inhabit this world of ours, and indeed, it sometimes seems that you can't turn on the news without hearing about the latest home invasion.

The other side of the coin is the rash of murdered children we've suffered lately. It's true that the gun doesn't kill people, it's the person holding it. It's also true that if that person couldn't get a gun, he'd be a lot easier for the teachers to overpower if all he had was a butcher knife.

I'd love to live in a gun-free society. But I don't, and the fact is that if "they" were to start creating that right now, the first guns to be collected would be all those owned by the law abiding citizens whose guns are registered. It would be a lot more problematic taking the guns away from all the criminals, and imagine how free they would feel if they knew that they were the only ones with guns.

As much as I might like the world to be different, I don't live in Fantasyland. I live in an unforgiving world that's full of armed idiots. So, I'll keep my gun for the time being, thank you, and I'll freely admit that I keep it out of fear, fear of other people's guns. I don't take it out of my house, I don't show it off, in general terms, no one knows I have it. But if anyone chooses to kick my door in one late night, they're going to know I have it. I have no ambivalence about it. I will not hesitate for a second if the choice is shooting a violent criminal or watching him murder my loved ones. The only chance he has of seeing another sunrise is to be better with his gun than I am with mine. I survived two tours in 'Nam. I'm pretty good...
